[Arashi] AneCan - 11/2009

I'm still on hiatus, but I promised I'd do the second half of their AneCan interviews and also figured this would be a nice way to kick off the 1000 friends mark celebrations :) For those who missed Ohno's and Sho's parts, you can read them here.

Comments are always appreciated; enjoy!

EDIT: I just found out that Basic and Plus accounts are only allowed to add a maximum of 999 friends, so I apologize to all the new people who have added this journal for not adding you back! It's not because I don't want to, it's because I can't :(

AneCan - 11/2009

Congrats! To a 10th anniversary
The shining Arashi DECADE (part two)

Following our previous issue,
our Johnny's serial this month is the second part of Arashi's special!
In this memorial year 10 years after their debut,
the historical first they accomplished by holding three days of concerts at Kokuritsu Kyogijo was a crazy success,
and their compilation best album has achieved million seller status!!
With the accumulation of hard work over a span of 10 years,
we look into the appeal of the Arashi who has established a position as top idols in both name and reality.

Aiba Masaki

"The five members of Arashi are always laid back. We don't care about exerting ourselves, and no one's bothered by things like having to wear stockings on our heads. It's not scary to do embarrassing things if the five of us are doing it, the enjoyment even doubles!!"

Because I want to keep laughing even 10 years from now,
I'll tackle anything with everything I've got!

"Our debut single, 'A-RA-SHI', was a song we sang over a really long period of time. It was given to us as the image song for 1999's Volleyball World Cup too, and even now, I still remember bits and pieces of singing it at the Yoyogi Stadium and music programs. I hadn't even heard about getting to debut at the time, and I couldn't believe that our own CD would exist in this world either (laugh). I'll never forget going to a record store by myself and seeing Arashi's CDs actually displayed there. I know I was just 16, but I didn't really grasp the situation clearly so at the same time that I thought 'They're really selling them (shocked)', I was also incredulous, going 'This isn't some kind of prank, is it?' I have memories of taking quite a while for the fact that we had a CD debut to sink in (laugh). Even now this song is a must for us to sing during concerts, and the more we sing it the more I like it. Whether to me or Arashi, our debut single is an important song that will never fade.

I'm the only one who's type AB out of Arashi's members, the others are all type A. This is only what I think, but conversations don't really come together if there's no type A people around. For some reason, many of my good friends in private are type AB, so even when we're just going out for a meal together, it's hard for us to decide on a time or where to gather... The time it takes to decide on the meal when type A people are around or when they're not is completely different (laugh). So type As take up an essential position to me, and I get a sense of that at times like those. I think Arashi is really amazing to have four people with type A in it. Our members are all type As with different personalities, so they're able to neatly divide roles up depending on different fields of expertise, and I just have to follow along (laugh). We were members gathered for the purpose of a debut, but we grew up together and somewhere along the way became an irreplaceable presence; I think even from hereafter this relationship will never change."

Q.02

★ Their 16th single released on May 17th of 2006 was used as the CM song for House Wellness Foods' "C1000 x Arashi".

"You can already tell from the title too, but it really makes you feel like it's going to be okay! It's a tune with an optimistic, upbeat tempo; if you listen to this the melancholy feelings will get blown away ♪"

Q.05
What do you want to get your hands on most right now?

A bicycle
"I've been thinking that maybe I'll travel by bike too~ (laugh) I want to ride an actual mountain bike and feel the wind."

Q.06
Which song do you want to hum when you take a bath?

Love so sweet
★ The theme song for Matsumoto Jun-san's popular starring drama "Hana yori dango 2 (Returns)" was their 18th single, released on February 21st of 2007. It took off as a support song for refreshing romances in a huge hit!

"It's got bittersweet lyrics and a pop-like melody, so it might be a song that's easy to hum on a whim."

Q.07
When you were in elementary school, what had been written on your report card?

"A luck-pusher who brims with appetite!"
"I'd eat even the school lunches of kids who were absent without leaving any behind, so there were lots of comments about me being mischievous and full of energy (laugh)"

Q.08
The ultimate choice:
A) The power to fly
B) The power to speak the languages of any country in the world

"A. If I can fly through the air then even moving around would be fun too!!"

Q.09
Who in Arashi can't stand to be alone?

Matsujun
"Hmm~. This is hard, but wouldn't it be Matsujun? Recently he said he wanted to get a dog. Maybe he's lonely (laugh)"

Q.10
What's a small extravagance to you?

"I like healthy night snacks of tofu with shirasu and nattou mixed in, but the timing of having all three of those foods bought and on hand is often slightly off, so there's always something missing... So based off that, I get excited when I have tofu and shirasu and nattou around!"

Ninomiya Kazunari

"I've only ever done activities with Arashi so there's nothing else I can compare with, so for me, I don't think about whether we're close or not. But people upon people that I meet would tell me that Arashi is a close group. Being told that alone means closeness might be a part of Arashi's appeal then."

If our debut becomes the starting point,
then our 10th anniversary is nothing but a checkpoint!.

"I think the work that became a turning point for Arashi was our Gansei Kinen shows in 2006. It was the first time we held concerts overseas, so there were all kinds of uneasiness over things like 'Would the people there know who Arashi is?' and how we could liven the place up, but when we held our concerts in Taiwan and Korea we received enthusiastic welcomes, with calls for Arashi at every opportunity (laugh). That was really moving. So we had that response, and when we returned to Japan we were allowed to hold shows at the giant Domes in Osaka and Tokyo. We've never done a tour for such a long period of time before, 'we can do more still?', we were simply happy that our Asia tour could keep going. All we did was repeat the same things, but it felt new every time, it was fun! We'll be putting together new tours so we don't get sad about it, but our final show at Tokyo Dome was truly moving. When we linked our hands together to give our final greetings at the end of the concert, I thought that Arashi might have just overcome a single wall.

Arashi's members have a miracle-like presence. For example, with family they will be nothing but family even to the death, right? If I'm forced to say it, a lover might become a wife or a husband, but friends will always be nothing but friends. But to me, Arashi's members are like both family and friends. With these people who can take on all kinds of roles, there's a relationship that can't be fit into a single definition. They've become like family, they've become like friends, they're also colleagues; it's because they encompass all sorts of things that I think it's miraculous. We've treated each other with care since long ago and our bonds continue to deepen with the passing of time, so we've come to understand everything about each other like husband and wife. But, if it hadn't been with these four people, I think Arashi wouldn't have continued on for 10 years. I'd like us to continue progressing without change 20 or 30 years from now."

Kotoba yori taisetsu na mono

Matsumoto Jun

"Arashi has a habit of everyone joining in whenever one person starts goofing off. (laugh) We do get tired of goofing off and stop at some point, but for some reason the timing for that is always one and the same. No one understands our timing for stopping but us."

The epitome of Arashi's concerts
is producing a sense of unity with the fans!

"Concert organization begins first by deciding on a theme. If you don't decide on a title, you can't put together a set list after all. Our 10th anniversary tour will be a memorial year, so putting thoughts and images into shape was an even harder task than usual. I think that concerts are things where the purpose is to let fans watch us, be entertained and go home happy, so there's no meaning in only suggesting what we ourselves want to do. I always treat the balance between what the audience sees and what we want to do with great care. If a single rudder is cut a different way the boat will sink, so it's difficult. The pressure is a given, but there were moments when I was at a loss with the (concert) organizing up until the last moment too. When I lose my way, I would talk with the other members and the concert staff who have worked on our shows with us since our debut and try to come up with solutions. You only get boiled down when you think about it on your own after all... I pretty much don't listen to Arashi's music usually, but when we get to the stage of putting together a set list, I would listen to them over and over again. It feels refreshing when you listen to them after a period of time, and the images come to mind more easily. By doing that, I aim to make both the songs we sing at our concerts and the style of our shows different every time. Once I start thinking about it, I'm the type that thinks only of concert-related things both awake and in my sleep, so recently I had a dream about being chased no matter where I went (laugh). It's the same with the moving stage (proposed by Matsumoto-san) too, a new show isn't developed quite that easily; you need to listen to and make adjustments to the music, look at the setting plans for the venues, watch all sorts of footage, lots of little things. When the organization solidifies to a certain extent and I come to an agreement with it too, the dreams about getting chased would stop (laugh). When we produce a sense of unity with the fans during concerts, the fact that the organizing had all come together would put me at ease, and personally speaking my excitement would reach its peak too."
